Overcoming Falsehood

“When he [the devil] speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.” John 8:44

Awhile back, former British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson received a call from the “Armenian Prime Minister.” The two men spent eighteen minutes discussing sensitive international topics, including Britain’s relationship with Russia, before Johnson ended the call. Imagine people’s surprise when a recording of the call showed up on YouTube. It was a hoax. Johnson hadn’t been speaking to the Armenian Prime Minister, but to an impostor. It’s hard to discern truth from falsehood today, because the devil, the “father of lies,” is spreading deception around the world. The safest way to overcome falsehood is with a personal commitment to speak the truth all the time.

Ephesians 4:15 tells us to speak the truth in love; Ephesians 4:25 says, “Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor.” Are you nurturing a little white lie in a crucial relationship in your life? It will come back to haunt you. Pranks and hoaxes will be revealed in due time. Satan, the father of lies, will be judged. Be truthful, and make sure your words are true and loving.

“He that takes truth for his guide, and duty for his end, may safely trust to God’s providence to lead him aright.” Blaise Pascal
